WOODEN BOAT

Varnish Services

Wooden boats can be stunning vessels which turn heads every summer when they’re well cared for, and a big part of their overall appearance is how well varnish is applied to the exposed wood on the boat. Varnish not only makes a boat look great, it plays a big role in keeping it seaworthy for years to come, and it’s easy to tell when varnish has been applied by an expert versus done by an amateur.

Our company provides upkeep and restoration services for wooden boats, and the application of varnish is a large part of both of these services. Wooden boats must be regularly treated with varnish, and our owner has a great deal of experience caring for these unique vessels.

In the sections to follow, we will discuss a few commonly asked questions about our varnish services, which will hopefully give you a better idea of how they can help keep your boat in pristine condition.

FAQs

What does varnish do for a wooden boat?

Varnish plays two key roles when applied to wooden boats: it protects the wood from damage, rot and discoloration and also has a great impact on the overall appearance of the boat. Varnish is applied in multiple coats and when it dries, it creates a seal over the wood which keeps it from direct contact with the water, protects against exposure to sunlight and provides a barrier against minor scratches. Varnish is typically applied at a minimum of once per year for wooden boats, and if the boat is exposed to the elements or in direct sunlight then it might need to be coated more regularly.

What is involved in the application of varnish?

The application of varnish is an art, and it takes years to perfect. The first step in applying varnish is to prepare the surface for finishing, which involves sanding a great deal to expose the natural wood, which creates a uniform surface and removes any imperfections. From there, varnish is applied with great care to provide a consistent coat over all exposed wood. This process is repeated multiple times depending on the needs of the boat, and drying time between coats is typically around 12 hours. Between each coat, the previous coat is sanded using a very fine sandpaper, which allows the new coat to adhere correctly without showing visible scratches.
