The seam compounds used in traditional planked hulls contain oils and binders that evaporate slowly over years of storage, and as those compounds dry out, they shrink and pull away from the plank edges, creating gaps that the owner can’t see until the boat goes back in the water and starts taking on water faster than the planking can swell tight. Fastenings are the second hidden concern below the waterline; even boats kept in dry storage can develop galvanic corrosion over long periods, particularly where dissimilar metals sit in contact or where ambient moisture has been cycling through the hull for years.
